The City of Dania Beach is proud to be partnering with The 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project to bring an artistic artificial
reef and create Broward County's First Mermaid Reef!
1000 Mermaids is a Broward based non-profit organization that creates monumental public eco-art projects & artificial
reef installations. The project serves as an underwater eco-friendly destination for tourism, research, and marine restoration. Powered by the Ocean Rescue Alliance & Reef Cells, their mission is to enhance marine habitats and expand fishery populations while
providing enhanced creative, economic and educational opportunities for the benefit, education and enjoyment of residents, students and visitors.
Mermaids have long been a symbol of humans’ connection to the ocean and we hope this installation will serve as a reminder that each of us can change our day-to-day habits to positively impact the health of our oceans. Simple things like using reef-safe sunscreen or limiting the pesticides and fertilizers used at homes and businesses will go a long way toward improving the stress on our marine environments and specifically, our coral reefs.
Dania Beach's Mermaid Reef will be composed of 20 modules with both mermaid sculptures and low profile reef habitat that creates new places for fish and coral to call home. Each module will be installed with Coral Lok, a coral transplanting device, so that all our modules are capable of coral installation for future restoration or remediation projects.
This deployment will also install turtle sculptures and sand dollar recognition plates onto the Dania Beach Mermaid Reef for individual and corporate donors. Donations to the project help to fund future reefs and restoration projects and each plaque creates a legacy that will live forever on the sea floor!
Be on the lookout for an upcoming schedule of our future coral rangers citizen science events, beach clean-ups and for the reef's deployment in Summer of 2021!
